Jesse Arifien's Summer Style Diary
Jesse Arifien is a Byron Bay-based stylist and creative director, known for her effortless approach to dressing that artfully balances simplicity and style.
We recently spoke to Jesse about her event essentials and what she’s looking forward to in the months to come.
Describe your personal style—what are you drawn to?
I would describe my style as a uniform that is relaxed and minimal. I don’t like anything too complicated and find that my go-to items are shirting, tank tops and looser bottoms that feel easy to put together, yet polished. I’m always looking for clothing that can work back with pieces I already have in my wardrobe so that styles can be reimagined in different ways with various outfits and accessories.
What are some ways to elevate traditionally casual fabrics such as linen and cupro?
Linen and cupro are ideal for dressier occasions during summer because of their natural comfort. I think the key is selecting an elegant silhouette—a cut that flatters and is also a little eye-catching. Maxi lengths and a revealing back add an evening edge. I like to pair my linen back with a cool strappy stack heel and a fun colourful necklace or earrings.
When it comes to event dressing, what are your wardrobe essentials?
I love relaxed, masculine styles such as shirting and silk pants for events. I don’t normally steer toward feminine dresses, but if I do find one that feels like me, I will always pair it back with a chunkier shoe to toughen it up a little. I also love silver chunky jewellery.
What are some ways to maximise the longevity of your pieces and curate a wardrobe that lives beyond the season?
I always try and envision at least three things in my wardrobe I can wear with a new style before investing. I also think about the life it will have if I stop wearing it in five years—maybe I can pass it on to a girlfriend or sell it as a pre-loved item for someone else to love.
What are you most looking forward to this summer?
We have spent the last few of our Christmas holidays either overseas or in the city with family. This summer, I am really looking forward to slowing down and appreciating the place we live by spending time with our friends and family.
