Can you begin by telling us a little bit about yourself, and the work you do through Fleurette?

My work involves sourcing and styling flowers, objects, interiors and visual elements for special events, private residences and celebrations, and for editorial work and commercial clients.

I curate the atmosphere, experience and story of a space or of a subject, with my key medium being flowers, along with objects and vases that I source and have collected on my travels for special projects and events.

Can you describe your creative process when creating a floral display—where do you begin and how does it come to life?

I am heavily inspired by nature and the seasons. A morning at the market or on the farm with my locally based growers dictates what is possible and available for each occasion.

Working to a theme and with the space of an event, I take all visual and environmental factors into account and draw on them to curate a unique visual representation of each experience.

With my background growing up as a dancer most of my life, form, line and the shape of flowers, vases, space and objects play a vital role in influencing my eye and overall aesthetic.

When it comes to bringing florals into the home, what are some simple ways to create impact?

I tend to let the flowers do the talking, based on their individuality as well as the shape they take as they follow the light. This will often dictate the appropriate vase or vessel for each arrangement.

When creating home arrangements, I tend to prefer flowers of one type styled into a vase that best supports their qualities.

It’s important to consider palette and placement within a space, what colours best complement the area and where a touch of life is needed to bring the beauty of the outside in.

Why is it important to source seasonal and locally grown blooms?

In our floral industry—much like many others in this post pandemic climate—it's never been more important to source locally and mindfully in supporting local growers and seasonal produce, while reducing our impact on the environment.

Working to the seasons, we're at the mercy of the elements, which can prove challenging at times, but can also be so beautifully inspiring and rewarding in learning and understanding the fleeting manner of mother nature.

Can you talk us through the displays you’ve created and how you chose to style them?

I was inspired by the surroundings, the interiors of the unique space, the location and proximity to nature and the sea. For me simplicity is key; allowing the beauty of the florals and the forms, textures and tones of each vase to speak for themselves. I am visually, emotionally and intuitively driven to combine and style them in areas of the home where a breath of life is most needed, and where the light and shade best complement each visual moment.
